EQ2 and BASE Jumping: A beginner’s guide, Tips & Tricks

June 27th, 2007 by rosehebe

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, there are a few points to BASE jumping in EQ that you must remember.

1) There are no parachutes in EQ. So safety is more of an issue. Always jump reasonably safely.
2) Always jump from the highest or more likely place to get an adrenalin rush that you can. Remember the object is to survive the jump!
3) Respect your fellow jumpers, and especially try to be civil to those who don’t understand what you’re doing.
4) Try not to fall on others.

There are so many great places to jump I could never show all of them in this post, so I will only show a few places and some variety of styles so that you can get a feel for the sport.

First, we have a Span. This is a great place because there are ^^^ orange and red mobs in the water below me here.  This only adds to the rush! *IF* I survive the fall (some water is too shallow and you hit bottom before the water slows you down. If this happens you could face serious injury or even death.)

It’s better not to check in advance if the water is deep enough, just do it.

Luck was with me this time, and I survived both the fall, and the local wildlife.

Here’s a BIG TIP:

You can jump off the top of climbable walls, fall ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM, as long as you grab hold of the wall before your feet touch the ground, you’re SAFE!

As you can see, it takes practise to grab hold of the wall BEFORE you hit the bottom…

The first thing you want to do when you’re getting started is Plan your Jump.
Theres no use jumping if you aren’t prepared and have a good plan of attack.

A big part of BASE jumping is enjoying the moment before you take the plunge…

Unfortunately I didn’t Look before I Jumped… always Look before you Jump…
I could have killed Mr. Diesalot there… but then, he’s Forever Jinxed so he should have known better than to climb a wall somebody is jumping.

The Chimney is great but it’s definitely not for beginners…
Not only is it a relatively short jump before you hit the ledge but you can’t veer left or right… if you stray outside the safe zone you will fall for sure. This was a tricky one to perfect.

There are some really really great jumps in Pillar of Flames too, this character is only level 28, and everything in the entire zone is red. The first rush is surviving the trip all the way deep into the zone to the Djinn Tower. This is the highest jump I’ve found to date. Although I still have high hopes of finding one in Maj’Dul.

Notice this character is not wearing any armor. It has actually fallen off from disrepair. This is a small price to pay for a BASE jumper. The local mender is always your friend. Except the local Cha’Grin mender not very far at all from where this photo was taken, because I have yet to figure out how to get faction with him.

If you get bored of doing the ground based jumps you can always take to the air… chase down a dust devil in Sinking Sands and…

Rocket yourself into the air! … You seem to get more height if you jump up into the dust storm… sometimes if you fall too far away from the dust devil you can die. Be careful, always jump safely.

I must have been 1000 feet in the air on this one…

There are spans and cliffs all over the place that can be used…

Just use your imagination and have no fear…

Where did this one lead? I didn’t have any clue when I first jumped it!

Just remember, safety always comes first. Most of the time.

Ok there have been a lot of questions on how this is done and people think I’m not really making these jumps, just climbing to the places and taking screenshots, so I’ve made this jump guide to show you it’s really possible…

First, please keep in mind this is a HARD JUMP.
Don’t try this as your first jump, please — you’ll only get discouraged. And don’t try this at home.

First, get to the Eye of Anuk.

This one I actually scouted first since it is a hard jump. I wanted to see the lay of the land.
Wall (1) is the higher of the 2 climbs. There is a curved ledge connecting the two walls half way up the well.

The task: Jump to the BOTTOM of wall 2 from the desert above.
Remember these are narrow targets, and the angle is difficult.

Here’s the view from the top.

Now remember, I’m a professional, so this will look easy.
Don’t think you can just walk up to the Eye of Anuk and do this yourself.
This kind of skill takes practise.

Now, here’s the jump…

You can see even when I’ve almost passed wall (1), wall (2) is still a very small and hard to hit target.

At this point the ground comes up at you very fast…

Success! Not only did I just about miss the wall and die by being a hair too far to the right … (but I didn’t)
But I almost hit the bottom! That’s as close to a perfect jump as you’re going to get.

Please note, I died 3 times attempting this jump. Don’t expect to get it on your first attempt!
Give thanks to Sony for reducing experience debt to almost nothing, which makes BASE jumping possible!
