Final Fantasy XI Weapon Skill Chains

Quite possibly, one of the most confusing and interesting concepts in FFXI to grasp is Weapon Skill Chains. Once you get the hang of it, it’s just a matter of looking up which Weapon Skills have which attribute(s).

General Weapon Skill Chaining Tutorial

The chart above can be used as a guide. Each Orb in the chart represents a different Attribute. Using the Arrows in the chart, you can tell which types of Skill will chain with the others. Arrows with 2 color ends indicate that using a skill of a type preceding the arrow before the type after the arrow will create a LvL2 Chain Effect. If it’s a normal black arrow, the subsequent Skill in the chain represents the Chain Effect that will occur. If a third Weapon Skill is done after this, whichever attribute that skill has, will determine the next Chain Effect.
For Example:
Player 1 uses the Club skill Shining Strike (Thunder) -> Player 2 uses the Sword skill Burning Blade (Fire) = LvL1 Chain effect of Liquification because Fire was the last skill used.

Adding a third player into the mix would simply add onto this.
For Example:
Player 1 uses the Club skill Shining Strike (Thunder) -> Player 2 uses the Sword skill Burning Blade (Fire) = Liquification -> Player 3 uses the Dagger skill Wasp Sting (Earth) = Scission.

A Weapon Skill can have up to 3 different Attributes, but only one Attribute of that Skill can be used in a Weapon Skill Chain. Weapon Skills with more than one attribute can be a bit confusing. Here is an example of a Weapon Skill with 3 Attributes:

SKILL LVL ATTRIBUTE EX/SP DESCRIPTION
Spinning Axe 150 Fire Earth Lightning EX Damage varies with TP.

The order the attributes are displayed is important, because depending on which Weapon Skill comes before or after it, there may be different effects.
For Example:
Player 1 uses Frost Bite (Ice) and Player 2 uses Spinning Axe after this. Through elimination the game will end up chaining Frost Bite with Spinning Axe and creating the Lightning chain of Impaction because Ice can only chain to Lightning, Darkness, or Water.

Now let’s mix it up a little.. What happens if the person uses a Weapon Skill that could go with 2 or more Attributes of Spinning Axe?
For Example:
Player 1 uses the Sword skill Burning Blade (Fire) -> Player 2 uses the Axe skill Spinning Axe (Fire,Earth,Lightning). If you’ll look at the chart, Fire can chain with Lightning and Earth. Fire is first on the list, but Fire doesn’t chain with Fire so since the Attribute of Earth is 2nd in the list for Spinning Axe, the chain will trigger Scission(Fire->Earth) instead of Fusion (Fire->Lightning).

One last thing. The damage type of the Weapon Skill may not match it’s attribute(s). This is normal. Take Spinning Axe above. It’s initial damage will always be physical. That damage is seperate from Chain Skill damage.. which would be of the element that the Chain was (Liquification-Fire, Scission-Earth, etc.).
This pretty much explains things up to LvL2 Skill Chains. As I find more information out about LvL3 Chains I’ll edit this, but as of now I don’t feel confident enough in my knowledge to try to explain it yet.

Timing

The timing of the skills is probably the easiest part to learn, but may take a bit of practice to master. A general rule of thumb is to wait 3 Seconds after the person before you uses his Weapon Skill. You can do this by either counting to 3 after you see “Such and such readies Blabity blah.” or actually create a macro that will do the waiting for you. Here’s a little sample:
-
/wait 3
/ws Combo < t >
-
The way to use this macro is to hit it as soon as you see that the person you are chaining off of has Readied his. It will automatically wait 3 seconds and then use the Weapon Skill, Combo, on whatever you currently have targeted.

That’s basically all their is to it.. Practice makes perfect!
