First Aid
October 1st, 2006 by Alice
What is First Aid?
The ability to administer healing processes on yourself and other players, regardless of your class. It’s the simpleist of professions to master in that it requires very little in the way of range of materials and what it does use is relatively easy to come by even with a brand new character.
First Aid is a Secondary Service Profession and does not count towards your 2 primary profession limit.
How do I learn First Aid?
You need to seek out a First Aid Trainer and be a character level 1 to begin your lessons in first Aid.

How do I get supplies & what can I make with them?
First Aid has a very small list of reagents required and what you do need is relatively abundant if you know where to look. Below is a list of all the reagents and items a First Aider can make.

| Note: The bandages hyperlinked will display a list of where you can pick up that recipe. The other recipes are taught by trainers. | |||||||
As you can see by the last column you need to have the First Aid skill to use the bandages but you can still give any you make to other First Aiders. You do not need the First Aid skill to use the Anti-Venom swabs.
You will need no other equipment than is listed above and can make these bandages anywhere in the field you wish, as long as you’re standing still. Your skill in First Aid increases by making bandages not by using them to heal. However, it also depends on the colour of your recipe at the time of making. The colour codes are below.
Grey = Will not receive a skill point in First Aid when creating.
Green = Rarely will you gain a skill point in First Aid when creating.
Yellow = Probably gain a skill point in First Aid when creating.
Orange = Always gain a skill point in First Aid when creating.
Red = Not high enough level in First Aid to create.
Here’s a captioned image of a typical First Aid recipe book. You will never fail when making a bandage {as is the case in some other games}.

How do I use the bandages?
You can choose one of two ways. Either click on the person (you or another) and right click on a bandage and it’ll start to heal the selected person. Or right click on the bandage, see your cursor hand glow then move it onto the person you wish to heal or their portrait and left click. The longest it will take is 8 seconds and the person being healed does not need to be sat down. Performing First Aid on someone will not raise your First Aid skill.
There is a cooldown of 1 minute on bandages before you can heal the person (you or another) with another bandage.
How do I train to higher levels of First Aid?
For Expert you’ll need to buy a book for 1 gold either from Deneb Walker in Stromgarde Keep, Arathi Highlands for Alliance or from Balai Lok’Wein in Brackenwall Village, Dustwallow Marsh if you’re Horde. You must have a First Aid skill level of 125 before he’ll sell it to you.
Training to Artisan level demands more of you however (you need to be at least character level 35 and have a First Aid skill level of 225 first) and only then can you get the following quests.
Horde
Once you hit a character level of 40 and with at least 225 in your First Aid skill visit Arnok, in The Valley of Spirit, Orgrimmar who will give you the quest “Horde Trauma” which sends you off to see Doctor Gregory Victor in Hammerfall who will ask for you to assist him in healing patients in a quest called “Triage” which asks you to save the lives of 15 of his patients.
Alliance
Once you hit a character level of 40 and with at least 225 in your First Aid skill visit Nissa Firestone, in The Great Forge, Ironforge who will give you the quest “Alliance Trauma” which sends you off to see Doctor Gustaf VanHowzen in Theramore Isle, Dustwallow Marsh. Doctor VanHowzen will ask for you to assist him in healing patients in a quest called “Triage” which asks you to save the lives of 15 of his patients.
Both
Both doctors will instruct you to heal the critically injured first but it’s advisable to let them die because unless you start healing them as soon as they spawn they’ll usually die on you anyway and that’s time wasted, time that you could have been healing a badly injured person instead. The Dr will give you 20 Triage bandages to perform the healing with. Below are some tips to completing this.
- Press Ctrl V to activate the health bar over the heads of the patients for easy health monitoring.
- Pull your camera out to third person so you can see as much of the room as possible.
- Put the triage bandages the doctor gave you in your aciton bar. Do not use your own.
- Position yourself in the middle of the room.
- To see all around the room you can either hold down the left mouse button to swivel the camera around you or the right mouse button to actually swivel yourself around on the spot, whichever you find allows you to click on dying patients easier. In the Horde hospital you don’t even need to swivel really.
- When a patient appears, dying, click on the Triage bandage in your action bar to begin healing.
- Keep your eye on other patients, swivel yourself or camera round as described above to monitor spawns all around you.
- When you see another appear left click on them to pre-select them and as soon as your current heal has finished click the bandages in your action bar and the pre-selected one will begin to heal. Saves valuable seconds this way.
As the patients are healed they’ll jump up, cheer and then run to the Dr. If you fail (6 patients die) throw any remaining Triage bandages away and re-request the quest from the Doctor, he’ll give you a fresh batch of bandages.
Is there anything else I should know about First Aid?
Food v Bandages - Bandages heal quicker than cooked food and for more health however you can combine the two. You can eat and bandage yourself or a friend at the same time. You can also heal pets and minions with bandages.
Combat - It’s not that you can’t bandage during combat it just isn’t always effective. It can be interrupted by the person being healed getting hit. However if they can pull away for a few seconds with enemy fire being drawn elsewhere you can usually get off 3 or 4 seconds of healing and on occasion that has literally been the difference between life and death.
Can I unlearn First Aid?
No. It’s a secondary skills and as you can have all three (cooking, first aid, fishing) there is no need to have an unlearn feature.
To recap on First Aid
- You can learn First Aid at character level 1
- Training costs money
- Recipes cost money (both learning and manuals)
- Performing First Aid on someone will not raise your First Aid Skill
- No bandages or anti-venom ointment (or whatever it’s supposed to be) are soulbound.

Patch Changes to First Aid
Patch 1.8.0 (11 October 2005)
- The minimum level for the Artisan First Aid quest line has been lowered to 35.
Patch 1.6.0 - 12 July 2005
- Also new First Aid recipe added to Argent Dawn at Honored.
Patch 1.2.0 - 21 December 2004
- A bug with bandages has been fixed. Previously, only the lowest rank bandage (Linen Bandage) was working correctly in that it brought up a channeling bar and required you to remain still while bandaging. All of the other bandage types (Heavy Linen through Heavy Runecloth) were working incorrectly, but have been fixed to operate the same way that Linen Bandages do.
Beta Patch 0.10.0 - 19 September 2004
- Several old trade skills are being turned into secondary skills. These do not count toward your two-profession limit, so players can learn all three secondary skills, in addition to their two professions, without restriction. The survival skill is being removed and campfires have been folded into the cooking profession.
The secondary skills are: cooking, fishing, and first aid. - Bandaging operates differently than it used to. Bandages now are channel cast and heal over time. If the player bandaging or the player being bandaged is struck in combat, the bandaging effect ends. Either way the target still gets the “recently bandaged” debuff.
Beta Patch 0.9.0 - 15 August 2004
- First Aid Skill increase rate has been slowed down.
- Anti-Venom made by physicians no longer requires first aid to apply.
