Introduction to Profession Expertise

Give your character more depth with the new Expertise system. Profession Expertise is a new feature that will let you develop your character by improving existing abilities as well as unlocking new ones for you to try out.

Expertise information listed below:

  • What are Expertise Points?
  • How will I know I’ve earned Expertise Points?
  • Expertise Trees
  • How to allocate Expertise Points
  • What does each Expertise Ability do?
  • Expertise Ability Pre-requisites
  • Which Professions will have Expertise Abilities?
  • Re-Allocating your Expertise Points

What are Expertise Points?

Starting at level 10 and continuing as you advance in levels, you will earn Expertise Points. You can spend these points on specialized Expertise Abilities.

At level 10, you will be awarded 5 points, and you will continue to earn an additional 1 point at every even level until you reach level 90. At level 90, you will have earned a total of 45 Expertise points.

How will I know I’ve earned Expertise Points?

You will get a pop-up window that says:

Expertise Trees

Each profession will start off with two available Expertise trees. You will see the tabs for each tree at the top of the Expertise window.

Each profession has one general Expertise tree and a profession-specific tree as well. Once all professions have their Expertise abilities available, a third Galactic Civil War Expertise tree will be introduced.

Once your profession has Expertise abilities available, you can open your Expertise window in-game through the main game menu. Look for the menu item, “Expertise.”

Press ESC or use your mouse to click on the button in the bottom right of your screen.

Once you’ve opened your Expertise window, you’ll be able to see the Expertise abilities and switch between the trees by using the “General” and “Path” tabs at the top of the window.

How to allocate expertise points

As you earn Expertise points, you spend them toward abilities specific to your profession. Different abilities require different numbers of Expertise Points so you may need to save your points for an ability that costs more points. Also, you may increase your rank in some Abilities by spending more points. Your rank in each Ability is noted in the side-bar description of it.

Selecting which ability you purchase is simple:

  • Left-clicking on the ability’s icon allows you to select that ability.
  • If after you click on a box you decide you would prefer a different ability, simply right-click on the box you just chose, and your choice will be cancelled.

You may select and un-select skills in this manner UNTIL you press the Train button in the bottom right hand side of the Expertise window.

Once you Train your skill, you will have purchased any ability selected during that session.

We’ll discuss how to re-allocate your Expertise Points later on in the article.

What does each Expertise Ability do?

Moving your mouse cursor over an expertise box displays general information about the skill in a pop-up box. More in-depth information will appear in the side-bar of the Expertise window.

Expertise Ability Prerequisites

Tier Prerequisites

Each profession’s Expertise tree is divided into tiers. You must spend a certain number of points in each tier before being able to spend points in the next tier.

For example, a Tier 2 Expertise requires that at least 4 points have been spent in that tree along with any other pre-requisites specific to that Expertise.

Previous Expertise Prerequisites

In addition to tier prerequisites, a specific Expertise Ability may require that you have acquired an ability that precedes it in the tree. These required prerequisite abilities must be fully purchased (i.e. all ranks in that Ability must be purchased) to unlock the following Expertise Ability.

For example, the Force Run Expertise (a tier 3 expertise) has Heightened Speed (a tier 2 Expertise with 3 ranks) as a pre-requisite. You will have had to have purchased all three Heightened Speed Abilities to unlock the Force Run Ability.

Which Professions will have Expertise Abilities?

Jedi and Bounty Hunter are the first Professions to receive Expertise upgrades. Smugglers and Officers will get access to the Expertise abilities in Chapter 3. Other classes receive their Expertise upgrades in following Chapter Updates.

Reallocating your Expertise points

If you train some Expertise abilities and find that you don’t like your choices, you can reallocate your Expertise Points. Simply head to your nearest Profession Counselor, click on her, and she will reset your Expertise Points.

You can reallocate your Expertise Points the first 5 times for FREE! However, a fee will be charged for any further reallocation of Expertise Points.

The “Profession Counselor” can be found in these city locations right by the starports:

  • Tatooine in Mos Eisley
  • Coronet in Corellia
  • Theed in Naboo
