Pest Control

Pest Control is only accessible by RuneScape Members. Please subscribe to get this feature.
Please note this is a ‘Safe’ minigame. If you die during this minigame, you will keep your items.
Introduction
The Void Knights are devoted to keeping the balance that exists on Gielinor as decreed by Guthix. In the past this meant little more than the odd assassination but times are changing. Recently creatures from another realm have started breaking through into this one, though so far their incursions are limited to small islands to the south.
![[image]](http://www.runescape.com/img/kbase/minigames/pest_control/fighting_portal.gif)
Outposts were constructed near the areas of regular breaches to house the Void Knights whose magic was used to close the portals. Unfortunately the invaders have become more aggressive and have managed to overrun some outposts before the ritual could be completed. Can someone help the Void Knights’ effort and fight back against the creatures?
Location
![]() |
The Journey starts in Port Sarim.
Find the boat highlighted to the left in green, just south of the Lady Lumbridge and speak with the Squire. She will explain there is a situation developing and ask if you want to go to the Void Knights’ Outpost. If you say yes, you will sail the long journey to the outpost south of Ape Atoll. When here, you will find yourself standing on the north dock of the outpost mapped below. |
| Welcome to the Void Knights’ Outpost!
There are a few shops here to explore as well as a bank. The Archery store sells ranged weapons such as Javelins, as well as providing Arrowheads up to rune.
The character in the smithy’s house will fix broken tools and Barrows armour, similar to the services provided by other NPCs such as Bob in Lumbridge. The Magic shop sells runes for a very fair price, all to help your efforts in holding the Creatures back. |

Requirements
To take part in Pest Control and enter the lander, your Combat level must be 40 or above.
Recommended Items
As you will be attacking and defending against a vast number of creatures, good armour is highly recommended. If you are going as a mage, you will need runes for your chosen spell. If you are going as a ranger, you will need your chosen ammo. Please note that any runes used or ammo lost will not be returned.
Good food is recommended if you wish to stay out fighting, however if you die, you will respawn in the area without loss of items, so you can simply run back into the action.
A hammer and hatchet may be recommended as you may (and probably will!) lose your built-in defences (walls and gates). You will need a hatchet to collect logs, and a hammer to repair the damaged gate/fence.
Please note: Cannons are not allowed on the island.

When you decide you want to join the efforts of the Void Knights, cross the gangplank to board the lander. The lander will leave after 5 minutes if 5 or more people are in the lander, or automatically when the lander is full (25 people).
When you arrive on the island the battle has begun! The aim of the game is to defend the Void Knight, and not let him die to claim your reward. The amount of creatures in the game is dependant on the amount of people in the game. The bigger the group, the more creatures will come through the portals.
![[image]](http://www.runescape.com/img/kbase/minigames/pest_control/island_portals.jpg)
There are 4 portals on the island (as shown in the map above). These portals produce creatures shown in the next section. Each creature has a specific ability or purpose to the minigame, so attack and defend well.
The game will end when the Void Knight has been defended for 20 minutes, or all the portals have been destroyed. (see rest of guide/rewards for the effects of this).
The Creatures
![]() |
Brawler Level 50, 75, 100, 128, 157 Brawlers are large monsters, varying in combat level and colouring. Generally these lumbering beasts will defend the portals and not stray too far towards the fort, however beware, for they will try to crush anyone who gets in their way! |
![]() |
Defiler Level 33, 50, 67, 84, 101 Defilers are agile and fast movers, again varying in combat level and colouring. Beware, for they throw large barbs over great distances, and hence have the ability to attack you (or the Void Knight) from far away, inflicting large damage. |
![]() |
Ravager Level 35, 52, 70, 88, 105 Ravagers are small humanoid beings with mole like claws. Varying again in combat level, colouring and hence difficulty, Ravagers will have no problem tearing down and through defences with their claws. If you are to defend well, it is important to kill these before you lose your gates! |
![]() |
Shifter Level 37, 56, 75, 94, 113 Shifters are dangerous melee fighters, with large spines on their backs. Again with different combat levels and colouring watch out for these creatures because they can create small portals for themselves to teleport short distances away. Beware: they can teleport past walls! |
![]() |
Spinner Level 37, 55, 74, 87, 92 Spinners appear to float above the ground and use spider like legs to repair the portals. They will not stray into fighting to take the Void Knight, but must be killed if any effort to destroy a portal is undertaken as they can repair damage very fast. |
![]() |
Splatter Level 21, 32, 43, 54, 64 Splatters look like a large ball of pulsing fluid with one eye in the middle. They should not be underestimated at all. Splatters are dangerous, as they will happily bounce towards your fort and explode! This inflicts damage on nearby objects and/or players. |
![]() |
Torcher Level 33, 50, 67, 83, 100 Torchers are again varied in colour and combat level. These are winged creatures that fly towards the Knight to attack. Similarly to the Defilers, Torchers will use very long distance attacks, however these are magical fire. |
Attacking
If you are attacking, you will need to ideally navigate your way around the creatures as they try to attack you or get to the Void Knight.
If you are attacking, your aim is to get to the portals and destroy them. Your efforts will be hindered by the creatures near to the portals that see you, such as the brawlers which defend them. Your biggest concern should be with any Spinners in the area near the portal (see the table above for Spinner image). The spinners will heal the portal, and heal it fast, so ensure you make these your highest priority.
For Mages and Rangers, there are good offensive positions to be found in the towers. You can stand in the tower, and shoot spells or arrows from above while remaining relatively safe and distracting attention from the Void Knight.
![[image]](http://www.runescape.com/img/kbase/minigames/pest_control/shootingfromtower.gif)
As shown in the image above, your enemy in the towers is the Shifters. They have the ability to open portals and pass into a nearby area… this includes short distance teleporting from the ground to the tower!
Attacking is beneficial for the defence as the Void Knight will be healed 60 Hitpoints for every portal destroyed.
Defending
![[image]](http://www.runescape.com/img/kbase/minigames/pest_control/defending_knight.gif)
Sitting behind walls is all safe and good, however walls will not protect the Void Knight, only you and your team can do that.
Your main concern with defending the Void Knight will be with Defilers, Torchers and Shifters. Defilers and Torchers are dangerous as they use VERY long distance Magical and Ranged attacks (see Creature section for attacks/more info).
You will need to send warriors out to kill these, or Mage and Range from a distance/the towers. Shifters are dangerous as they can teleport right next to the Void Knight if they wish to attack him straight away!
| Your final worry defending will be with Ravagers. Ravagers are dangerous to defence as they can simply tear through the defences external to the base, and also smash doors down.
You will need to defend areas with broken gates to prevent creatures walking up to the Void Knight, or send someone with logs and a hammer to repair the gate. Beware, if the Ravager(s) are not killed, they will happily smash the gate down again as it is getting fixed! |

Rewards
There are 2 ways you can win this Minigame. As long as the Void knight survives, you have won, and will receive one point for beating the game.
Please note: If you do not deal more than 50 points of hitpoint damage total (on any monsters or portals), you will not be awarded a point. You can also earn 5 of these damage points for repairing broken barriers.
You can only have a maximum of 250 points. To cash your points in, speak to or right-click a Void Knight found on and about the Outpost. The Void Knights will only offer training in skills that you have at level 25 or above.
The Void Knights have now added herb, mineral and seed packs as well as their unique armoured robes and mace to the shop, which you can buy if you have enough points.
Please note: Those who trade in 100 points at a time will notice the knights grant an extra 10% on top of the experience you buy!
