Introduction
So…you want to know a little something about reputation. Well, that is my goal in writing this guide. Before this research, there was no other extensive guide like this. Everyone was running around Azeroth willy-nilly, wondering what all these reputation points were going to get them anyway. Here it is, the real deal, and you’re going to step away with this new found knowledge, the smartest person in all of Azeroth.
Many wonder whether faction and reputation are the same, and some even use those words interchangeably. The fact of the matter (that is, if you want to sound smarter than your average ogre) is that faction and reputation are two different things entirely, but they do go hand in hand. So, in starting with the basics, let’s get you some vocabulary:
Faction – a faction is any group or any individual that you may attempt to do quests for, etc. For example, the Cenarion Circle, Thorium Brotherhood, or Zandalar Tribe.
Reputation – what you earn when completing certain quests or killing certain enemies in order to gain favor with some factions. (Gaining reputation with some factions allows you to purchase items that are unavailable to other players. Building reputation also opens up some unique quests, usually with impressive item rewards, that are similarly unavailable to others.)
Now that you know the difference, don’t you feel a little bit smarter? I know I do. So, throughout the rest of this little guide, when I start talking about reputation or faction you’ll know what I am talking about.
There are many factions in game that you can work for. Some of them are common, and some of them are not so obvious. I’m going to do my best to list them all here for you. If I miss a few, don’t be concerned; that’s what updates are for!
Factions do not appear automatically on your character’s reputation pane. However, every time you encounter a new faction group, it shows on your character reputation page. The moment that occurs you can begin building your reputation with them.
If you press ‘U’ on your keyboard it will bring up your reputation pane. On this pane is a list of factions that you have earned reputation with, or are at war against. It can also be brought up when you open up your character pane (‘C’) and click on the ‘Reputation’ tab. This tab also includes a ‘mouse-over’ detail. Just mouse over the reputation bubble and it will display how much further you need to go in order to go up to the next reputation level.
If you’re Horde, like myself, the pane should have a list of main factions, for example: Horde, Horde Forces, Steamwheedle Cartel and Other. For Alliance players, these factions are Alliance, Alliance Forces, Steamwheedle Cartel and Other. Under each faction heading are sub-factions. For instance, the Steamwheedle Cartel consists of four individual groups: Booty Bay, Everlook, Gadgetzan and Ratchet. Take note that these particular ones are all related: they’re all goblins.
The sub-factions of course grow in number as you grow in level and encounter new mobs. In addition to the main, well-known factions that you may have by the time you reach level 60, I’ll be including ones that are not as well known. Of course, with the expansion only a few months away, numerous new factions will be added to the game. However, lets continue in the present and begin with our current factions, shall we? Please also keep in mind that I am doing my best in listing all items that are received from class quests and vendors, but these are subject to constant change. I am likely to miss some, but I’m getting paid in rupees, so what more do you expect?
Okay, gaining reputation with various factions has its benefits and rewards. As you complete quests given by these factions, or kill their enemies, you are able to gain favor with them. Gaining reputation with these factions is important, because it may be the only way to purchase those much sought after alchemy recipes or blacksmithing plans that you will be unable to purchase anywhere else. In fact, sometimes you may not even use a recipe or plan unless you’ve become exalted or revered with a particular faction. Gaining reputation with your Horde or Alliance factions is important too, as it saves you money on flight travel. Neutral status can give you a flight fee of one silver and some copper, however you bring that rep up to friendly or revered, even exalted, and your cost of using the windriders or gryphons decreases by a silver or so. Interesting huh?
Listed below are the different reputation levels. Generally speaking, you start out as neutral with most factions; gaining friendly takes some effort, but it’s not excessive. Honored is a bit more challenging; revered and exalted are monumental accomplishments requiring tremendous effort.
| Exalted |
The highest level of reputation attainable with any faction. |
| Revered |
Special reputation level reserved for heroes. |
| Honored |
10% discount on bought items from vendors. |
| Friendly |
Standard reputation level which gives access to certain vendor items. |
| Neutral |
Standard reputation level for factions that are not on a players list and are not KOS (Kill on Sight). |
| Unfriendly |
Cannot buy, sell or interact, but are not KOS either. Isn’t that a real peach? |
| Hostile |
KOS, there’s no coming back from this one folks. |
| Hated |
KOS (all opposing team factions are set on this level). |
As I’m sure you have guessed, affecting one faction can ripple through and affect any and all factions that are connected. For example, killing a goblin in Booty Bay will anger and affect the goblins in Ratchet and Gadgetzan. (Have you ever wondered what the “At War” checkbox does? Have some fun; experiment with this fun feature). When you are neutral in any faction, meaning they are yellow in color to you, just check off the “At War” box and watch how fast they turn red and then how fast you die. It’s funny. You should really try it. No? Go ahead, it’s ok, I got your back. What? You don’t trust me? Awe, my heart is hurt.
You may find yourself asking about a particular faction, “how can I improve my reputation?” Well, there’s really only one of two ways: complete quests and kill certain mobs. Its that easy. At the end of this guide, I will give you a list of factions and their affiliates, so that way, you’ll think twice before killing any reputation destroying mobs by accident.
Let’s begin
Alterac Valley
Though AV (as we like to refer to it) is a battleground, it is also a valuable reputation resource. In fact, the benefits are two-fold. As you gain reputation for your faction, either Stormpike or Frostwolf, you also gain PvP rank. The higher rank you get the closer you get to options for epic quality gear. However, that is another guide for another time.
Lets stick to the basics. As you fight for your faction in Alterac Valley, you increase your reputation with the Horde or Alliance NPCs in the battleground (for battleground info, please refer to The Big Fat Guide to the Battlegrounds by Pig). As you do so, you will unlock special rewards available only to the most reputable of players. Alterac Valley can be found in Hillsbrad Foothills. The Alliance entrance is north of Southshore, while the Horde entrance is just north of Tarren Mill.
There are two special vendor NPCs, one for Horde and one for Alliance, standing outside of their respective entrances.
These two NPCs sell special rewards. When you raise your reputation level with them to a new category, you unlock a new set of rewards. For example, once you reach friendly reputation, a new page of heretofore secret items is revealed for your shopping pleasure. When you reach the next category of reputation, honored, another page opens for you and so on. Below, you will find a list of the rewards for each level of reputation you earn, I’ve included the price of the items on this list for reference. The level cap for AV is 51-60. Sorry, no lowbies allowed.

Arathi Basin
Located in the Arathi Highlands, Arathi Basin (AB) is a mad race for resources. It is a place where the weak are separated from the strong and the team with the most points wins.
Like AV, the same reputation rules apply. The further you get in rep, the more access to awesome armor and weaponry you have. I prefer AB to AV, for reasons that probably are only my own. It seems that reputation is easier and faster to come by in AB. There are fewer players per raid and therefore more rep to go around.
Now, the rules for AB are simple. Both sides of up to 15-player raid groups compete for nodes spread throughout Arathi Basin. Each claimed node generates resources for the controlling team. The more nodes your raid owns, the faster you gain natural resources. The first team that gains 2,000 resources, wins the game.
However, don’t cry if you’re the losing team. Although it is sad to lose, it is not the end of the world. The winning team and losing team both earn honor and reputation after completing the battleground. Even if you don’t win, you walk away with an honor token and with reputation, earning many rewards. Level caps are as follows: 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60.

Warsong Gulch
Warsong Gulch (WG) is not for the faint of heart. It is a great deal of fun, in a fast-paced capture-the-flag game. Again, the idea behind WG for reputation purposes is the same as AV and AB. You capture the flag of the opposing team and take it back to your own base. Do this three times and you win the game. However, watch your back. There are opposing team members trying to thwart your efforts at every corner, making achieving the seemingly possible next to impossible. Of course, you’ll have a ton of fun trying.
Like the others before them, I’ve included the rewards for various reputation levels. They are awesome pieces of equipment, and are popular for making a ‘twink’ (a low level alt with uber gear). Level caps are roughly the same, except now lowbies have room to show off their new skills and talents, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60.

Zandalar Tribe
So, the Zandalar trolls have a bit of a historical past within Azeroth. They are the first known tribe of trolls, supposedly the tribe from which two empires were formed, the Gurubashi and Amani. The lore here takes a turn that can only be described like something out of a very lame science fiction novel.
See, the silly Night Elves came and spread their happiness throughout the land, driving the trolls into exile (poor trolls!) Well, it wasn’t long before the Gurubashi got smart and enlisted the help of mean old Hakkar, a merciless oppressor who demanded daily sacrifices from this followers. (At this point, dealing with the Night Elves must have looked like a much better idea…). Anyway, it wasn’t long before the Gurubashi rebelled against the evil Hakkar and turned against him (about now he probably wished they would’ve stuck with the Night Elves, too).
Simple, huh? Well, this little back story isn’t done yet.
The strongest troll tribes (including the Zandalar) banded together to defeat Hakkar and his loyalists, the Atal’ai. The united tribes narrowly defeated Hakkar and cast out the Atal’ai, but at a price: the Gurubashi Empire soon fell. It wasn’t long until the exiled Atal’ai priests discovered that Hakkar’s physical form can be summoned within the ancient and once-deserted capital of the Gurubashi Empire, Zul’Gurub. Reports confirm the presence of the dreaded blood god in the heart of the ruins (This convoluted story would have made a solid B-grade Hollywood movie at best).
Apparently, this conflict isn’t over (is it ever?). The Zandalar trolls have not given up. They arrived on the shores of Azeroth to battle Hakkar once again, but the blood god has grown increasingly powerful. He has bent several tribes to his will and even commands the avatars of the Primal Gods— Bat, Panther, Tiger, Spider and Snake. (These are mini-bosses in Zul’Gurub). With the tribes splintered, the Zandalars have been forced to recruit champions from Azeroth’s varied and disparate races (that would be you and your forty person raid group) to battle, and hopefully once again defeat Hakkar.

| What I want to know is if there are other ways ie/ q’s that can be done to raise rep with factions, ie/ Silverwing Sentinels …. the amount of rep gained per three battleground vouchers makes going from neutral to friendly pretty daunting, let alone reaching for revered or exalted. |

| A question. I reached Reverred rep. with Orgrimmar. Anything that is affected? Some extra quests? Or extra equipment maybe? |

| One thing I noticed is that you tell what levels are for the 3 Battlegrounds, however, what are the recommended levels to start talking to the individual tribes in order to begin building up rep and recieve quests?
Very good though! |

If you get your rep high enough with bloodsail buccaneers you can get a pirate hat.
Also its worth noting that darkmoon faire rep is a negative as it gets higher you get fewer turn in quests you can do. |

| thanks for the helfpul guide elvyra. As someone else said a list of quests that increase reputation and which of those you can repeat would make it perfect;p |

| meh, thanks for all the info, but there was no point in insulting ppl for creating or enjoying, the so called, convoluted lore around azeroth’s factions. |

| ‘Bloodsail Buccaneers - I can only tell you that whenever I am around these guys, they get really mad and throw empty beer bottles at me. They also have really mean parrots that they keep as watch dogs.
Hydraxian Waterlords - Reputation gained by killing mobs in Molten Core. It is said that this will let you gain access to a quest which can be found in Azshara, but I have not confirmed this at this time.’
i heared that if you have rep with bloodsail guys you can buy somthing, need to kill Booty Bay guards to raise rep.
the waterlords gives you quest, which gives nothing but expiriance at start. later, it will give you trinket with +8 resistant to all, and the end quest(have to be friendly or honored to get it) you get a ring with (i think) 10 fire resist and stat. there is a version for melee and a version for casters. |

| Nice article, But i’d like to see the benifits of others, and some stuff cleared up that right now i just hear as romour. Such as.. the winterspring trainers and how when you get exalted with them you can buy a frostsabre mount, and i HEAR that once you are exalted with the argent Dawn, then, and ONLY then will the baron’s mount drop in strat.. you know, go online keep your ear to the virtual floor, and sort out rep FACT from myth. Other then that… a good article! Keep em coming!

These guys are the ones you need to do quests for to eventually get the water from therm, the water is used to extinguish runes in MC which allows you to summon domo, which allows you to summon raganaros. ALl the detail on Nozdormu and cenarion and you dont know this?????
Shen’dralar- these are the elves inside Dire Maul, you get faction with them by doing the libram quests in DM, no benefit from having rep though. |

| It’s ‘exalted’ (as you wrote correctly several times) not ‘exhaulted’ like it’s written in many of the table headers. |

| One more Faction
There is a frostsaber trainer in the very nrth of ws, at exalted he sells you an exclusive frostsaber mount, grinding rep for him is supposed to be a real pain. |

| As an FYI Gorn One-Eye is now in southern Felwood and as you stated gives a quest to x number of the opposing faction furlbogs, after that he will accept the feathered headresses that drop of the same mobs. Also there is a new NPC where Gorn use to stand that gives a quest to kill x number of mobs in the northern part of Felwood. She also will accept the feathered headresses after you complete her quest. The NPC the Winterspring side of the tunnel has a quest and will accept beads that drop after completing the quest she gives. The quest rewards really are quite decent for the level you can get them at.
In regards to the Hydraxian Waterlords, there’s a fairly long quest train Lord Hydraxis gives out culminates the choice of two rare rings. Also, doing the quest series enables you to get a special water that douses the runes that are near the major bosses in MC. After all eight runes are doused Majordomo Executus is summoned.
Very informative guide btw. |

Very helpful guide. It would be helpful to get quests for the factions on the list, and you could add the below.
Wildhammer Clan - Not much known except that this is a Alliance only faction. You can receive quests, and do repeatable turnins for rep, as well as rep for killing trolls in Hinterlands & Arathi Highlands.
Bloodsail Buccaneers - *add the following* You gain bloodsail rep by killing NPCs(mostly guards) in the goblin cities. There’s a quest u can do for them at neutral(Don’t ask me which quest I don’t know exactly). |
