TenTonHammer’s Guide to Alchemy

April 13th, 2006 by Alice

Being an Alchemist allows you to create powerful potions that will help you and your friends in the World of Warcraft. From the common healing and mana potions to the high end flasks available only to alchemist masters there is always something useful to create. Alchemy also allows you to transmute many items from one thing to another, this includes iron to gold and elemental essences form one type to another. The profession of Alchemy is a primary trade skill in the World of Warcraft. When choosing Alchemy as a primary skill, make sure you really want it, as you may only have two skills at once. Many classes chose alchemy just so that they can keep themselves equiped with mana or healing potions and if you are going to be mainly soloing, this is not a bad idea.

What items do alchemists produce?

Alchemists produce a variety of useful potions. Higher level Alchemists are also able to transmute metals and other materials, changing one type of material into another. The main items that are produced are healing and mana potions. These items are always in demand and are fairly easy to make at any level.

Is there a complete list of Alchemy produced items?

YES! We at TenTonHammer have produced a complete list of Alchemy items, their abilities, skill and items required to create them and much more. We maintain them in HTML format and as a PDF ready to download and print as a handy reference.

Who uses Alchemy?

Everyone can! There is really no best class to be an Alchemist. Between all the healing, mana, protection and buff potions there is something for everyone! Add in the high level transmutes and the ability to make money selling potions at any level and you have a good profession.

Why should I be an Alchemist?

The best reason is to be able to make your own potions instead of buying them. You can also help supply your friends or sell your additional potions. If you are really stuck for what to do as a profession in WoW Alchemy can always be useful.

What other skills go well with Alchemy?

Herbalism is usually paired with Alchemy so you can gather your own herbs. While it is possible to go without Herbalism, it would be expensive to do so. As well, there are VERY high level potions (called Flasks) that require a bind on pickup herbs to create.

What are the level requirements for Alchemy?

Rank Skill level (min - max) Min. Character Level

Where do I train to be a Alchemist?

All major cities and most towns have Alchemy trainers. To train as a journeyman you need 50 skill points in Alchemy and at least level 10. To train as an expert alchemist you must have 125 skill points in Alchemy and be at least level 20. To become an Artisan alchemist you must first get 200 skill points and level 35.

If you don’t know where to find the next trainer, just talk to your old trainer, they will tell you where to go.

How do I make Alchemy items?

In your skills section, there will be an Alchemy icon, click it to bring up your list of recipes. If you have the required ingredients a number will show up beside the recipe, this is how many you can make of that item.

What ingredients are used in Alchemy?

The primary ingredient in almost all Alchemy recipes are herbs. A few potions require certain fish.

Where can I find these Ingredients?

You gather or buy these herbs. The best way is to have herbalism as your secondary skill and then get them yourself, however you can buy them on the auction house. If you are gathering these items you may find our gathering guide useful, it can be found here: TenTonHammer’s Gathering Guide.

Why can’t I make a Free Action Potion?

You can only make the potions you have the recipe for. You are given some basic recipes when you first start, but the rest of the recipes are obtained from NPC’s or other players. Some of the best recipes are only found as rare drops from high level instance dungeons.

What are the difficulty ratings for recipes?

From easiest to hardest the color are gray, green, yellow, orange and red. Recipes that are red will never be in your list of potions, but they are visible at the trainer. Orange potions will always increase your skill, yellow potions sometimes increase your skill, green potions will rarely increase your skill, and gray potions will never increase your skill.

How do I increase my Alchemy skill?

Your increase your skill by creating potions that are green, yellow or orange difficulty level. Gray difficulty will not increase your skill.

What is the best way to level Alchemy?

If you are keeping Alchemy at your level, make the potions that use herbs you can easily obtain. You may have to wait a few levels before you can collect the herbs required for the next batch of potions; briarthorn and sungrass for example. Sometimes people will request specific potions; you can make them for “free” to gain skill if they provide the materials.

One of the easiest ways to level alchemy is to farm the herbs needed for and produce healing and mana potions. You will always be able to use them yourself or hand them out to friends in groups for instance runs. You will be well respected and get many invites if you are always handing out healing and mana potions at the start of instance runs.

If you have started Alchemy at a high level, you will usually have enough gold to purchase herbs to level your Alchemy quickly through the lower skill levels. However, you will need to gather herbs if you want to raise your Herbalism skill.

How can I make money as an alchemist?

Healing potions and mana potions always sell well in auction houses, especially superior and major. Once you receive a high enough level, you should certainly learn to make a philosopher’s stone from Alchemist Pestlezugg in Gadgetzan, and then arcanite transmute- arcanite is the most valuable metal bar available and can only be transmuted by alchemists, and depending on the server an arcanite bar usually costs 15-20g to make and sells for 23-30 gold.

Are there Quests for Alchemy?

There are a few quests for Alchemy. The “Liquid Stone” quest in the Badlands will give the Lesser Stoneshield Potion Recipe as a reward; the quest will be available once you complete “Coolant Heads Prevail” and “Gyro..?”.
